Every Hair is excited to contribute reviews on the industry and will look for ways to highlight texture-inclusive education and culturally safe hairdressing practices within the national training framework. Our contribution will be grounded in the belief that hair care is not only technical but psychosocially significant especially for communities with textured hair, where hair care is embedded, inherited, and affirming knowledge.

Currently, Australia’s hairdressing training overlooks this knowledge and fails to prepare hairdressers for a multicultural, multi-textured society. This creates huge gaps in hairdressing service provision. Every Hair proposes the inclusion of core training on caring for every hair type, delivered through a culturally safe, socially informed framework. Additionally, we advocate for training pathways that support young people from marginalised communities to become qualified professionals who bring cultural and community embedded knowledge into salons and the wider industry.

This Review is an opportunity to reshape Australian hairdressing qualifications to reflect the real diversity of our population and unlock hairdressing as a tool for equity, wellbeing, and conviviality.
